Let's think about Supermarkets.
Arranged in aisles, they are logical and help you shop.


Imagine if the products were put on random shelves?

As a customer, you wouldn't know where anything was, and as an
employee, you wouldn't know what stock you needed to replenish. 
That equals two unhappy people.

Think of products in the same way.

There are Categories, like Fruit, Dairy, and Bakery.

Let's take Fruit.

Within that category, are different types of fruit, like Berries and Apples.
These are Sub-Categories.

Within the Berries, are Strawberries, Blueberries, and Raspberries.
The Products.

This is the Product Hierarchy.

Let's think about the Strawberries.

Ever noticed that you can buy them in different ways?
They might come in punnets, which are small, medium or large.

The Small, Medium and Large are the characteristics or attributes of the products.

Using attributes means you can analyse your sales data,
spot trends, and quickly identify growth opportunities.

 Those small punnets of Strawberries?
Because you attributed them, you can see that they're selling really well,
so now you can buy more and maybe trial an Extra Small size.

You'll satisfy sales demand, grow your profits and have happy customers.
